Pregnant celebrity nudes: what Demi started

Intrigued by the cover shot of a pregnant Nia Long, I picked up Ebony at LAX airport on my way home this weekend. The shot brought to mind the evocative Demi Moore cover for Vanity Fair back in 1991 when the idea of featuring a nude gestating :) woman on the cover of a major magazine was unthinkable.

Can’t stop this thing Demi started: now the pregnant nude on a major magazine cover is *yawn* nearly commonplace. Initially, Demi’s image had the positive effect of de-mystifying pregnancy and removing the ick factor, showing that a pregnant woman could be sensual, too. Now, as Deborah Dunham proclaims, the pregnant celebrity nude gives women yet another unrealistic body image to help us feel bad about our own, more realistic, pregnant bodies.

“Can’t we just have nine months to stop focusing on how we look?” Dunham pleads.

What do you think about all these naked pregnant celebs?

  1. I prefer to see them in clothes to be honest. The Demi Moore cover was beautiful and original. (still the most beautiful of them all imo) After that it is just more of the same.

  2. I think by this point it’s a bit overdone. Women have to come up with something new to do for their pregnancy covers.
